RESEARCH NURSE

Salary: £30,401 - £33,587 

Term: Maternity Cover Fixed Term, January 2020 – October 2020

RICE is an independent research charity and an internationally renowned centre for dementia research, diagnosis and treatment. Our research aims to find drug and non-drug treatments for people with dementia and other diseases predominantly affecting older people as well as providing support to them and their families and carers. We are looking for a full time research nurse. This will involve being a part of a multi-disciplinary team working across a range of clinical and research activities and this role combines clinical practice and research activities.

RICE is the designated provider for the Memory Clinic within Bath and North East Somerset and you will assess patients, including assessment of their cognitive function, and liaise with GPs, community mental health teams and other relevant services to best support their needs.

As a Research Nurse, you will play a key role in the provision of effective nursing services for optimal study delivery. You will be responsible for providing support as Study Coordinator on trials and will be closely involved from clinical start-up at the Site Initiation Visit right through to close-out.

The successful candidate will have full adult or mental health nurse NMC registration and preferably experience working with people with memory-related problems and dementia within areas such as NHS memory clinics or older adults services. Experience of participating in clinical trials and research programmes would be an advantage.

QUALIFICATIONS:  A current registered adult or mental health nurse on the  Register of the Nursing and Midwifery Council NMC

JOB SUMMARY:  To support the memory clinics and the clinical research programme carried out at RICE

THE ROLE

In this role, you will be part of a multi-disciplinary team working across a range of clinical research activities at RICE. Our work in the NHS contracted Memory Clinic helps us to identify and work with suitable patients for clinical trials, to develop ideas for research and to use the findings to help establish new treatments and inform best practice. The role combines clinical practice and research activities.

Hours of work are normally 9.00am – 5.00pm, with 30 minutes lunch, but some flexibility is required. Occasional out of hours work may be necessary, for example, as related to a particular research project.

GENERAL

RICE – The Research Institute for the Care of Older People has been helping older people live better lives since 1985. Our vision is to make growing older better by undertaking clinical research to improve the diagnosis, medical treatment and care of dementia and other related diseases that are particularly relevant to older people.

RICE is an independent registered charity dedicated to essential research and providing support for people with dementia, their families and carers, and to improving the quality of life of everyone involved. We also provide contracted NHS Memory Clinics for the Bath and North East Somerset (BaNES) area. Our internationally renowned dementia research and treatment centre is located in a purpose built facility in Bath on the Royal United Hospital site. Currently the focus of our research is memory problems and dementia, particularly Alzheimer’s disease.

CLINICAL RESPONSIBILITIES        

  1. 1.       Memory Clinics

As the designated Memory Clinic provider for the whole of Bath and North East Somerset, RICE sees over 1500 patients every year. As an important part of our busy clinical team, you will assess patients, including assessment of their cognitive function, and liaise with GPs,community mental health teams and other relevant services to best support their needs. Occasionally you may also see patients at home or in the Community Memory Screening Clinics, some of which are held outside Bath.

  1. 2.       Clinical Research

As a Research Nurse, you will play a key role in the provision of effective nursing services for optimal study delivery. You will be responsible for providing support as Study Coordinator on trials and will be closely involved from clinical start-up at the Site Initiation Visit right through to close-out. You will be trained every two years to follow ICH Good Clinical Practice (GCP) guidelines. Study responsibilities include:

  • Co-ordinating study visits
  • Monitoring patients and volunteers during a study
  • Developing a good relationship with the Sponsor Company’s clinical research staff regarding the day to day running of the studies and assisting them at their monitoring visits
  • Supporting patient and volunteer recruitment
  • Maintaining accurate data collection, records and medication accountability
  • Carrying out all study assessments according to the research protocol
  • Centrifuging blood specimens and organising their transport and storage
  • Performing electrocardiograms
  • Liaising with laboratories and radiology departments
  • Ensuring that study related equipment and supplies are ordered in a timely fashion, well maintained and calibrated when appropriate
  • Administering medication under the directions of a doctor
  • Attending Investigator meetings, both in the UK and abroad
  1. 3.       Academic research programme
  • Assist RICE research team in projects involving various aspects of normal ageing, age-related memory changes and dementia
  • Contribute to the academic research programme of RICE

PROFESSIONAL & EDUCATIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Abide by all legal and statutory regulations relating to practice including regular revalidation
  • Comply with the legal requirements and rights of the individual according to Mental Health legislation
  • Maintain standards in accordance with the Nursing and Midwifery Council
  • Be familiar with all RICE policies and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and comply with these at all times, and assist in ensuring the SOPs are kept up to date
  • Help to ensure that patients and carers are as fully informed as possible about their illnesses and benefits to which they are entitled. 
  • Assist in setting up and running the Carers’ Courses.
  • Promote the work of RICE to visitors, including other health professionals and members of the public, and represent RICE at external functions.
  • Take responsibility for on-going personal development and education, in particular regarding the clinical areas of work at RICE
  • Maintain up-to-date skills in resuscitation, manual handling, infection control and safeguarding
  • Share skills and contribute to training of new nursing, medical and other staff 
  • Contribute to educational sessions, eg Journal Club 

 OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES

  • All staff are required to carry out other such duties as may reasonably be required for the smooth running of RICE.
  • All RICE staff must be eligible to work in the United Kingdom
  • All staff are required to undergo DBS checks, and to sign a confidentiality agreement.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Registered Adult or Mental Health Nurse with at least 2-3 years post registration experience
  • Understanding of NMC Code of Practice and up-to-date knowledge of nursing theory and best practice and its application to own practice and behaviour

 

Patient Care

  • Demonstrated effective nursing practice in all registered nurse procedures
  • Proven empathetic and caring approach to patients and relatives, and assured patient confidentiality,  dignity and respect at all times
  • Ability to prioritise own busy workload and to work under own initiative within boundaries
