About Us

The research carried out at RICE covers a wide variety of areas and is intended to advance the knowledge and treatment of the more serious conditions affecting older people, in particular Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia and to improve their quality of life.

Research Institute Mission Statement:

To carry out and publish effective research to improve:

  1. diagnosis, assessment and treatment of people with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias
  2. the quality of life for older people
  3. knowledge of the ageing process and its effects on the brain and thinking processes

To run Memory Clinics to provide:

  1. an in-depth assessment for people with memory problems, Alzheimer's disease and related conditions
  2. a focus for research
3. to offer appropriate education and training for older people with memory problems, their families and carers and healthcare professionals working in the area.

There is an experienced team of 14 full and part-time medical, nursing, psychology and research staff. Additional expertise and facilities are available to the Institute through its affiliation with the University of Bath and other organisations.

The Director of RICE, Professor Roy Jones BSc MB FRCP DipPharmMed, is an Honorary Consultant Geriatrician in Bath and an Honorary Professor at both the University of Bath and the University of Bristol.  He is also the Dementia Specialty Lead for the NHS West of England Clinical Research Network. 

RICE is an independent charity. It was opened in 1986 by its then Patron, Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Kent. In 2008 the new RICE Centre opened on the Royal United Hospital (RUH) site in Bath. The new centre has the space to enable RICE to open up its research programme and to undertake further studies as well as improving support for people with dementia in the Bath area, and their families.
